Bruce Lukaszewicz (BELphotos) > Fire Captain Korry Belmontez, Fire Engineer Robert Sherman, Fire Engineer Joseph Via, Firefighter Oscar Rodriguez, Firefighter/Paramedic Eric Allen, Firefighter Chad Allison, Firefighter/Paramedic Christopher Babler, Firefighter Robert Lukaszewicz, Firefighter Eric Nelson, and Fire Engineer Michael Shadoan On the morning of December 17, 2004, San Diego Fire-Rescue Department was dispatched to the Mason Hotel on 5th Avenue. Upon arrival crews found heavy smoke billowing from the front doors and the third floor windows. There were several occupants hanging out the third floor windows in need of immediate assistance. Bystanders were also yelling that there were several occupants just inside the front hallway unable to escape to the outside. Engineer Shadoan raised Truck 1’s ladder with Firefighter Rodriguez on it to a third floor window while Firefighter Allison raised a 35-foot ground extension ladder to another third floor window with trapped occupants. These three individuals rescued four occupants from the windows on the third floor while encountering heavy smoke. One of the victims was blind and needed special guidance. Meanwhile Firefighters Allen and Lukaszewicz and Engineer Via arrived on Engine 201. They masked up, entered the building and encountered heavy black smoke with zero visibility. They searched several rooms before finding a victim lying in the hallway. Because of the extreme heat, they had to temporarily retreat. Finally they were able to drag the victim inside one of the rooms and partially close the door. They were able to get the unresponsive victim out the window, down the ladder and to the ground. Unfortunately, this victim did not survive. Arriving first in on Engine 1, Firefighters Babler and Nelson masked up and proceeded inside the front entrance encountering several occupants needing assistance out of the building. Firefighter Nelson carried out the first victim he encountered then returned inside and rescued a second occupant. Meanwhile his partner, Firefighter Babler, advanced a hoseline to the second floor where he encountered a male occupant who needed assistance. Dropping the hoseline, then helping the man to safety, Firefighter Babler heard a loud noise from the second floor courtyard. In the courtyard, Firefighter Babler found a man screaming “my leg is broken and I can’t breathe.” Firefighter Babler carried the man downstairs to awaiting medical treatment. Engineer Sherman, single-handedly, put several hoselines into operation and placed ladders in windows, which assisted in the rescue of several occupants. His performance as an Engineer, under an extremely stressful situation, allowed other crew members to focus on rescuing occupants and extinguishing the fire. Bruce Lukaszewicz (BELphotos) > Fire Captain Michael Ditomaso Jr, Fire Engineer James Shelby, Firefighter/Paramedic Joseph Lee, Firefighter Brian Fox. On December 17, 2004, Engine 31 was dispatched to the Mason Hotel fire on Fifth Avenue as part of the second alarm assignment. Upon arrival, Engine 31’screw laddered the second floor on the north side of the building and broke into windows that were walled over. Engine 31’s crew made entry onto the second floor and found heavy black smoke with zero visibility. Flames were entering from the stairwell on the south side of the building. Captain Ditomaso, Engineer Shelby, Firefighters’ Lee and Foxbeg and systematically forced entry and searching each room for occupants. Proceeding to the third floor, Captain Ditomaso found a large, unconscious victim in one of the rooms. He called to his fellow crewmembers that then assisted in carrying the victim down three flights of narrow stairs. Upon receiving medical treatment, the victim responded and was transported to the Burn Unit at UCSD Hospital. San Diego Fire-Rescue Department presents the Lifesaving Citation to Captain Michael Ditomaso Jr. and the Unit Lifesaving Citation to Engineer James Shelby, Firefighter/Paramedic Joseph Lee, and Firefighter Brian Fox.
